Double Adobe Quilter Peggy Kennedy Atkinson's family homesteaded in the Sulphur Springs Valley. Her granddad Stoner moved over by the San Pedro River after separating from his wife. In 1939 Mr. Stoner was struck by lightning. Peggy's parents and her older brother Charlie moved over to take care of the farm until her Uncle Donald would arrive. In 1940 Peggy and brother Charlie attended the Palominas School, in the same location as the present school.  In 1941 Peggy was back in the Sulphur Springs Valley on Frontier Road. Peggy then attended the Frontier School house. The Frontier School house closed in 1947. Peggy attended Greenway School. At the age of 9, Peggy began quilting and has never stopped. She would attend the Frontier Homemakers’ Clubhouse where they did a lot of hand quilting. The club was an important part of her life. Peggy remembers her mother making beautiful quilts but called them practical. They tied the quilts instead of hand quilting them.  They were filled with old wool blankets or worn out bedding of all kinds. The tops were made from material that was handy such as cotton, wool, old denim jeans, or corduroy.

Peggy has made quilts for all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoys piecing quilt tops that the Double Adobe Quilters then finish and donate to the area hospitals and care centers. Peggy also joins along in the live music that plays at the Double Adobe Quilt show.
